'DIE BRAAK' PAVILION

The Braak is the historic town square and cultural heart of Stellenbosch, a prosperous town in the winelands of South Africa. The Braak is a contested site: it is surrounded by heritage buildings from the colonial era, drawing tourists as well as vendors from many African nations. The town's court, a private high school and two churches attract townspeople, but the Braak is also home to a large homeless community who lay their washing out on the Braak's lawn. The Stellenbosch Triennale commissioned an architectural pavilion that would draw attention to the Braak and speak to common concerns through a creative intervention.
